THE GREENBOX WITH THE PNX PROCESS

Our cooperation partner DenkGrün Recycling GmbH specialises in plants that use an innovative and novel PNX process to recycle organic waste in a climate-neutral way and produce additional energy from it.

With these sewage sludge plants, sewage sludge is disposed of cost-effectively, the valuable raw material phosphorus - classified as a critical raw material by the European Union - is extracted and sold and the surplus energy generated during these processes can also be used to generate energy by means of a combination of the storage technology used and a photovoltaic system: With the aim of enabling energy self-sufficiency.

Sewage sludge feed
The sewage sludge is fed into the system via two moving floor containers. The sewage sludge is transported into the system using screw conveyors.

Sewage sludge hydrolysis
By mixing the sewage sludge with an alkaline digestion agent, hydrolysis takes place in which organic substances are broken down and form water-soluble salts.


Sewage sludge dewatering
A multi-stage vacuum evaporation process releases water and ammonia in the form of vapour. By washing with sulphuric acid, the ammonia is separated in the form of ammonium sulphate, which is one of the products obtained.

Autothermal reforming
In an autothermal reformer designed as a rotary tube, residual water in the form of water vapour and then organic salts are converted into combustible gas at temperatures of 700 - 800 °C.

Gas purification and utilisation
The resulting process gas is cleaned using basic scrubbing, iron hydroxide solution and activated carbon filtration and then converted into electricity and heat in a CHP plant.

Recovery of the digestion chemicals
The powder discharged from the rotary tube is eluted with water, resulting in a solution of around 50 per cent. The inorganic, undissolved components are separated using a centrifuge. Phosphorus is removed from the remaining solution and the remaining solution is fed back into the process.

First ecological recycling plant for phosphorus recovery from sewage sludge at the AWV Unteres Liesingtal site

Denkgrün is building and operating a stationary plant for the treatment of municipal sewage sludge with simultaneous recovery of phosphorus and nitrogen with a total capacity of up to 2,000 tonnes per hour.

General description
The plant utilises sewage sludge from biological wastewater treatment plants, recovering energy and raw materials such as phosphorus and nitrogen. This plant is installed and operated directly at the AWV Unteres Liesingtal wastewater treatment plant. The plant capacity is up to 2,000 tonnes per year of municipal sewage sludge with a dry matter content of between 20 M-% and 30 M-%, with annual operating hours of approx. 8,000 hours. The amount of sewage sludge that can be effectively treated depends on the proportion of organic substances, which is different for fermented and unfermented sludge.

Hall description
The hall with dimensions of 15 m * 13 m * 8 m and a resulting total area of 210 m2 is built on a concrete foundation. The steel structure consists of galvanised beams, which are clad with panels. The hall is structurally divided into two areas, the storage area and the section containing the main process engineering equipment.
